Second Battalion friends:

Most of you will remember Bill Winchester, the RCASC cook who was posted into Second Battalion, The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada in the late 1960s as a private soldier who remained with us during our 1962 – 1965 Germany tour and our 1966 Cyprus deployment as he rose to the rank of sergeant. He then got out and entered retail operations with the Esso station in Oromocto.

Although Bill was not Black Watch, we were proud that he was such a loyal and skillful member of our Second Battalion for so many years.

Harold William Winchester
It is with great sorrow that the family of Harold William “Bill” Winchester announce his passing on July 20, 2022, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born in Digby, NS, on December 16, 1931, he was the son of the late William Daley and Nettie Adelia (Wright) Winchester, and beloved husband of nearly 73 years to Vera (Carr) Winchester. Bill started his career in the military, taking tours to Germany and Cypress. After 15 years served, he retired as a Sergeant, and then started up Winchesters Esso and Convenience Store in Oromocto, as well as another one on Waasis Road in Oromocto West. Eventually Bill retired again, but found himself with time on his hands and returned to the work force as a beloved school bus driver in the Geary area. Bill loved hunting, fishing and golfing, spending time in the summer at the cottage in Harvey Lake, vacationing south and cruising with Vera. He was a past member of Gage Golf Association. When it was time for a meal, Bill was a great cook and could whip up something delicious for Vera and their family or friends. Family was very important to Bill, and he was a loving husband, proud dad, granddad and great granddad. He will be greatly missed by his wife Vera; children Wendy Greenwood (Jim), Ian Winchester (Kelly), Wanda LeBlanc (Jerry) and Daryl Winchester (Maxine); grandchildren Erin Beaudin (Tim), Jeff LeBlanc (Megan), Maggie Winchester (Jake), Sara LeBlanc, Matthew Winchester (Shannon), Mark Winchester (Ashley), Allison White (Tyler) and Ian Winchester(Jeanelle); great grandchildren Mya, Helen, Nolan, Nevin, Laurel, Isobel, Axel, Noah, Arthur and soon to be baby LeBlanc; former daughter-in-law Kathy Simpson (Maggie’s mother); half brother Michael Greenlaw (Charmaine), as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his sister Frances Ruxton (James), brothers Larry Winchester (Phyllis) and Richard Winchester (Alice). In keeping with Bill’s wishes, there will be no formal services. For those who wish, donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the Oromocto Food Bank or Hospice House Fredericton.
