It is with deep sadness and profound regret that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Idris Jobe ‘Diddy’ Taylor on Thursday, May 16, 2013.
The only son of Violet Taylor-Lyons and the stepson of Thomas Lyons, Idris was born on April 5, 1936.
He served in the Canadian Forces for 14 years as a member of The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada and was stationed at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown in Oromocto, N.B. Upon returning to his beloved Cape Breton, Idris was employed as a heavy duty mechanic/operator at Turner's Transfer and the Glace Bay Heavy Water Plant. He was a long-time employee of Nova Scotia Power, working at the Seaboard Generating Station and the Lingan Generating Station until his retirement.
Idris was active in many activities in the community throughout his life. During his younger years, he enjoyed playing hockey and was an avid bowler.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Together with our Mom, Dad was the backbone of our family. He will forever be remembered as a kind, patient, selfless, hard-working individual whose joy in life was to spend quality time with his family, always willing to lend a hand or to listen when asked and never expecting anything in return. He was treasured by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, which was evident from their constant presence at Mom and Dad's home.
Idris leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his wife and best friend, Catherine (MacQueen), with whom he recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary; daughters, Kay (Craig), Sharon (Billy), Gloria (Mickie), Susan (Kevin), Nancy (Frank), all of Glace Bay, and Sandra (Jonathan) of Halifax; and sons, John (Claudette), Jimmy (Marie), Neil (Trish), Michael (Leslie) and Brian, all of Glace Bay. Also left to mourn his passing are many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Idris will be especially missed by his best friend and constant companion, his dog, “Skippy”.
He was predeceased by his mother, Violet Taylor-Lyons; grandson, John Paul Taylor; mother-in-law, Effie MacQueen; uncles, Willie Taylor and Idris Taylor and his Aunt Cecelia Taylor.
Visitation will be held at Patten's Funeral Home, Union Street, Glace Bay on Monday, May 20, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will take place at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Brookside Street, Glace Bay on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 11 a.m., followed by burial at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Grand Lake Road, Sydney.
Online condolences may be sent to the family www.pattenfuneral.com.
Memorial contributions may be made in Idris' name to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation or the Glace Bay Food Bank.
