Subject: The Battle of St Julien – the Canadian Expeditionary Force’s introduction to the Somme of 1915

In addition to the usual friendly atmosphere, the meeting of old friends and new, the Address to the Haggis; we are pleased to present for your pleasure a verbal walk through the first battle of the First World War involving Canada’s Volunteer Army. A battle that not only was Canada’s introduction to the Somme but the world’s launch into chemical warfare.
Our Speaker comes well equipped to speak on this subject not only because of his background and present position as Assistant Professor of History at Royal Military College, Kingston but also with personal experience on the battlefield having served in many of the world’s hot spots through his 42 year career in the CAF.
