L.M. (Lionel / Ron) Blanchard
1935 - 2021
Black Watch friends:
Regret to report the passing of Lionel (Ron) Blanchard on 18 January 2021 in Kanata, Ontario.
Ron served with First Battalion, The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada in Gagetown and Cyprus during the 1960s.
He was the last of five brothers and three cousins, all from the Spruce Brook area of Newfoundland, who served The Regiment during the Cold War. His older brother A.G. (Angus/Gus) and cousin C.A. (Anthony/Tony) served with our Second Battalion in Korea. His brother R.J. (Robert/Bobby) served with First Battalion in Aldershot but released just as the unit departed for Germany in 1959, while brother T.C. (Timothy/Tim) went to Germany with the unit and remained with 1RHC when it returned to Gagetown in 1962.
Another brother, H.W. (Harold/’Hap’), and cousins J.E. (John/Jack) and J. (James/Jim) also spent some time with the Regiment, probably First Battalion, however details of their service are currently unavailable.
Unquestionably a unique family contribution to our Regiment’s history.
Funeral arrangements pending due to CODIV-19.
