Branch News

Our annual Regimental Day BBQ in June proved as popular as ever this year.  A total of 73 members and guests enjoyed good weather, good food, and good comradeship - although we did miss the large contingent from Montreal and we hope to see them back next year.  We were again fortunate to have Gloria Sellar, our Honorary Colonel, General McAlpine, and Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel Vic Chartier in attendance.

As special guests this year, Deborah and Gerald Warren, parents of the late Corporal Jason Patrick Warren, were able to join us at Connaught and accept Honorary Membership in the Upper Canada Branch.  General McAlpine presented them with their Honorary Membership cards, and we sincerely hope that they will continue their association with The Regiment.

Gloria updated us on her efforts on behalf of Black Watch veterans who are suffering from exposure to Agent Orange.  By now you will have heard that Gloria’s efforts over the past number of years have seen some positive results – namely the ex gratia payment of $20,000 to those who meet the conditions set out by Veterans Affairs Canada in their announcement on 12 September.

wwiivetsucbbbq2007Gen McAlpine, our Honorary Colonel, also gave a brief address and noted that there are eight more soldiers from 3RHC scheduled for deployment to Afghanistan in July 2007. Both Gloria and Gen. McAlpine are working tirelessly on behalf of the Regiment and deserve the gratitude of us all.

The accompanying photo is of the four WWII veterans at the BBQ (From left Bill Davis, Alex Roy, Donald Gordon, General McAlpine).  We note with sadness that one of the four, Alex Roy, has subsequently passed away.

A new Branch management team, shown below, was elected at our 2007 Annual General Meeting:
Don Ludlow replaces David Paull as Branch President;
Terry Seaver replaces Don as Vice President;
Charlie Bond replaces Sherry Hummel as Branch Secretary; and,
Phil Bury replaces Rick Hummell as Branch Treasurer.
The Branch membership extends a heartfelt thanks to the outgoing executive for their leadership and dedication over the past few years.
