Regret to report that Major (Ret) R.N. (Bud) George passed away today in the Perley-Rideau Veterans Health Centre, Ottawa.

Bud had a long and distinguished record of service with the Canadian Army. That service began as a Boy-Soldier in the 1st South Alberta Regiment (Militia) in March 1935. By April 1938 he had reached the rank of Lance-Sergeant with that regiment.

In June 1939 he reverted to Private and transferred to the Calgary Highlanders (Active Force). He quickly regained his three stripes. In 1941 he was commissioned in the Calgary Highlanders, by then in the United Kingdom, and served with them until late 1943 when he transferred to the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada (because he “wanted to get into action!”).

He served with the Seaforths through Sicily, Italy and North West Europe – being wounded on three separate occasions in those campaigns.
After the war, he remained in the Supplementary Reserve but connected with the Seaforths. In June 1951, he was appointed to command “E” Company, Seaforth Highlanders, and took it to Germany where it became “C” Company, 1st Canadian Highland Battalion, and eventually 1st Battalion The Black Watch RHC. He completed a brief tour at Western Command Headquarters before returning to 1RHC in 1955 until he was posted to Army Headquarters in 1957.

In 1959 Bud was posted to 2nd Battalion RHC in Gagetown as 2ic to Lt-Col Bill Leonard. He returned to Germany with 2nd Battalion in 1962 and remained there until 1963 when he was posted to AHQ. He stayed in Ottawa until and after his retirement in February 1968.

Bud was great soldier with an abundance of skill and determination, and was a role model for many of us who served with him. Several of us living in Ottawa were fortunate to have visited him over the past few weeks.
