It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Lewis 'Big Lew' Gregory Fahey, at the age of 65. Lewis died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born and raised in Sydney Mines, Lewis was the son of the late Patrick and Muriel (Jessome) Fahey.
Lewis joined the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 17 years, and was a proud member of the Black Watch (Royal Canadian Regiment) of Canada, during which time he served overseas, in Cyprus, doing peacekeeping duties. He had been employed at Michelin Tire in New Glasgow, terminal supervisor with Purolator Courier in Sydney for 16 years, owned and operated “Big Lew’s Convenience” in Sydney Mines, and had been a taxi driver in Sydney.
Lewis was an avid fisherman, he loved to fish, especially in the “Fahey Pool” in front of his late brother Patrick’s cottage on the Margaree River.
Lewis will be sadly missed and is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Maureen (Tait); daughter, Julie Ann; son, Kevin, both of Glace Bay; grandsons, Cody and Jaxon, who he loved and adored very much. He is also survived by his sisters, Ella Mayeu, Glace Bay, Laura Chiasson, Innisfil, Frances McInnis, Medicine Hat, Rita (Alan Found), Berwick, and Ann (Michael Ley), Louisbourg; his brother, Gerard, Medicine Hat; brother-in-law, Lorne Tait (Lynn), Ontario; sisters-in-law, Sarah Ann, Sydney Mines, Ketha (Bill), Ontario and Joanne (Michael), Halifax, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Alice Butts; brothers, Bill, Leonard, Patrick and Michael; his brothers-in-law, Andre Mayeu, Ernest Butts, Michael Chiasson and Reid Tait and his sister-in-law, Minnie (Bates) Fahey.
Sincere thanks to Dr. Michel McKeough and his sister, Louise, Sydney Mines, Dr. Mark Ellerker, Glace Bay, Dr. Burns with palliative care and all the wonderful nurses and staff on the “3rd Floor” of the Glace Bay Hospital. Also, a very sincere thank you to the VON nurses who came to his home and provided Lewis with very special care during this difficult time.
Visitation for Lewis Fahey will be held in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Monday, Feb. 29, 2016, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will take place Tuesday, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr.
