Gary David Hawkes age 65 of Amherst passed away peacefully in the early hours on Monday, December 31, 2012 in the comfort of his own home, while surrounded by his loving family.
Born April 14, 1947 in Sackville, NB, Gary was a son of the late Orland and Clissie (Dobson) Hawkes.
Gary proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces, joining at the age of 17. He served with the Blackwatch Battalion and did a tour of duty in Cyprus. When the Blackwatch disbanded, he transferred to the Second Battalion R.C.R., after which he became a member of the Military Police until his military retirement, having served 21 years.
Following his retirement he joined the Corp. of Commissionaires working in the Amherst and Springhill area. For years Gary worked first with his father, and then with his brother Wayne in the blueberry industry. He worked in forestry with his son Gary Jr. and as a baker for Lighthouse Market in Amherst.
Gary’s lifelong passion was with gardening and hunting, and spent many years doing both. He proudly passed his knowledge of both to his son and grandsons. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Gary will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Dorothy Hawkes (nee Johnston); son, Gary Blair Jr. (Connie) Hawkes, Amherst; daughters, Sherry Chapman (Doug Richard) and Rhonda (Kenny) Embree both of Amherst; step daughter, Debra Wagenaar, Amherst; stepson, Tim Wagenaar, Beamsville, ON; sister, Gloria Stewart, Amherst; grandchildren, Jessie, Danielle, Jordan, Ashley, Keisha and Brandin.
As well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Besides his parents, Gary was predeceased by his brother Wayne Hawkes.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. followed by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 10 tribute and funeral service all at Campbell’s Funeral Home Chapel, 98 Church St. Amherst (667-9906), Rev. Byron Corkum officiating.
Interment will take place in the spring in the Amherst Cemetery.
