My grandson is a cadet with #9 cadet corps here in london on. He was promoted to wo2 and given a black pace stick. Someone told him it came from the Blackwatch. I never saw a black one all the time i was with the Watch can anyone help me out here??

I do recall black pace sticks. They had a silver colored knob on the end however they were not pace sticks which most Sgts or above carried.

Hi Ted I think the one you are refering to is called a drill cane it was carried by sgts.

One of our members, Dave Willard, at one point was donating pace sticks to different Cadet Corps. It is possible it came from him as well. Dave may be able to tell you.

Hi Ted, Bob Woodward on this end.I still have to this day. a drill cane that I took from whom I believe was Sgt.Maj. Smith when we presented him with a new one from our plt. while I was with the 1st A Coy in 62-63?. It is black with the Regimental cypher in silver on the top. Made in England.
Also has silver tip on bottom. If I could I would put photo of cane on and I have one of Mr. Smith also.

Hi Woody,
About 15 years ago I developed a standard cadet pace stick which was black in colour. The quality of the stick was such that it was fully functional and could withstand cadet use but it was not designed for competition or the rigors of regular force use. These were purchased from me by the National Army Cadet League and sold across the country to the various corps. I did donate about 100 sticks to specific corps like the Hastings & Prince Edward Regiment Corps and The Black Watch Corps in Montreal amongst others.

Good day all,
To help out in your conversation, there are 2 types of measuring tools carried by WOs' and Snr NCOs'.
1. Pace stick - DND issue, this measures a troops pace and during drill practice. There are two colours - Tan (laquered wood) and Black. The tan is carried by Warrants, and the black one is traditionally carrier by the DSM.
2. Drill cane - Purchase item for the WOs' and Snr NCOs' through the Regimental Kit Shop. This cane is made of black Malacca, 36 in long, has a silver or white metal cap with the Regt Cap badge either super-imposed or stamped on it. The tip is silver ferrule.
